thanks again. I hope that people will think about how we push nature to the edge. These Ibex are endangered, and this matters to me. I wanted to put a hard style to it in a way, and chose to use a palette knife. Again, there is another long story ...

Thank you Rodey. This was a bit of a poke at things really... as you do! We are a nation of oddities sometimes, and I am joining in wholeheartedly. Hopefully, people might see the humour behind some of the work and help me to keep going.

Favorite paints and brushes?

Ages ago, I watched an amazing artist use pastels. He used a different ground to me and painted very differently. When I switched to the same type of ground, my artwork suddenly took on a different life! It actually looked much more alive rather than a flat and hopeless collection of strokes and smudges on paper. I was very grateful for his help. Suddenly, I did not feel quite so hopeless and it inspired me to try harder and keep going.

Sometimes, we can struggle or get frustrated with our use… Continue

To paint or not to paint and win a prize...

I have decided that the majority of major art prizes for figurative and contemporary work in the UK are just a lot of rubbish. How can someone win one of the major prizes in the UK for figurative work, without actually managing to paint a person? Absolutely nuts!

It seems very easy for people to criticise wildlife art. You either paint well, or you are learning to do that. A lion either looks realistic and ready to eat you up or not, and if you are good, then perhaps you can sell work because p… Continue

Hello world....

Well here I am friends, and thought that I would have a quick waffle... read if it entertains?...

I have decided to try and get my work out into the local area. I managed to find a privately owned gallery in the city centre, and they will hire a secondary room out so I need another twenty paintings! HAR!!! Not impossible I know, but it is getting harder to take photographs etc and a whole pile of other things.

I have been working hard lately on trying to improve my technique in oils. I have re… Continue

Thanks for your comments Jo-Anne, we all compete with ourselves its the only way to keep improving. I have taken gouache a long way and now I am painting in oils to keep myself from becoming stale, I am enjoying myself again, something I havent been doing for some years now. Being a proffessional wildlife artist really does have its ups and downs.

Thanks very much Jo-Anne - the horns took ages as I don't paint much below a 30" square canvas and that ram (Magnus) just about filled it. The hippo you have done is fantastic. Have you ever thought about putting work in for NEWA? Have a look at http://www.newa-uk.com
